Treatment Techniques Can Include:
Myofascial Release Therapy
Myofascial release in the John F. Barnes Method or MFR-JFB is a safe and effective hands-on technique that is performed directly on the skin without oils or creams. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia. Clients remain partially clothed with shorts, sports bra, or bathing suit which allows posture and fascial restrictions to be assessed and treated. MFR involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.). The use of MFR allows assessment and treatment following the biopsychosocial health care model which see’s each patient as a unique individual. The one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which the therapist uses a multitude of MFR techniques and movement therapy. Independence is promoted through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self-treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.
MFR treatment can help back pain, bladder problems, birth injuries, bulging or herniated discs, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical and lumbar injuries, chronic pain, degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, headaches or migraines, menstrual problems, myofascial pain syndrome, neck pain, osteoarthritis, pelvic pain, plantar fasciitis, painful or inflamed scars from surgery or injuries that are bound down, sciatica, scoliosis, shin splints, tennis elbow, tinnitus, TMJ syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, whiplash and more.
